I’ve always wanted to get to Hawai’i some day – but now I know why I haven’t made it yet. I needed to read this brilliant book first!
This episode of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is an interview with Annie Daly and Kainoa Daines, the authors of Island Wisdom: Hawaiian Traditions and Practices for a Meaningful Life. It’s one of those brilliant books – all too rare – which serve the function of teaching us really important things about a destination before we arrive, and enrich the experience we have once we’re there. Having read this book, I know for certain I’ll get so much more out of a future Hawai’i trip then if I hadn’t read it. (A similar experience was reading Helen Russell’s The Year of Living Danishly before my trip to Denmark, which improved my time there in so many ways, and definitely made for a much more thoughtful trip.)
I had such a wonderful chat with Annie and Kainoa, and I’ve tried to edit it down a little – we couldn’t stop talking! – but it’s still a little longer than a regular episode. Hope you enjoy it and that if you’ve visited Hawai’i before, it gives you some extra context, or that it enriches a future trip if you’re like me and haven’t had the magic of a Hawaiian experience just yet!
