I remember very well how nervous I was the first time I took my son on a long-haul flight on my own. He was three and although he was already pretty well-travelled, I’d had a bad experience returning to Perth from Melbourne when he was just under two, and I was trying to imagine coping with that for the whole distance to Europe. Of course, I needn’t have worried (story of my life!) and he was a trooper.
Since then, I have done so many trips with him and although there are still some things I worry about, which seem amplified when travelling as a single parent, there is also so much I love about it – he is just the best travel companion of all!
I was so pleased to talk to other single parents about their travel experiences and I think you’ll find this episode a lot of fun, whether you’re a parent (or single parent) or not!

Single Parent Travel
Travelling with kids in tow is a great way to see the world, but if you’re the only parent, it can add a degree of difficulty – but it can also make for the most rewarding trips of all! On Episode 223 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I chat with three single parents who’ve had wonderful experiences taking their kids away – although sometimes, things do go wrong!
My first guest is Cindy Siano whose son is now in his twenties – but she has a very vivid memory of a single parent moment when he was eight, and they tried out skiing and snowboarding in the Netherlands.
I then chat with Jennifer Johnston who took two of her teenage sons on a trip to Japan – coincidentally, to go skiing, although long before they get on the slopes, something that is only funny in retrospect went wrong.
Finally, I had a great discussion with listener Rita about her three-month long trip with her daughter to Europe and northern Africa – it’s inspired me to want to do something that long with my son too!

Interesting podcast Amanda. Travelling with kid(s) really is a big challenge and I really admire you on taking the plunge. Hoping that your blog will reach a lot of singe parent out there and be inspired from it.
